USCG Commandant visits OSRV Hawaii Responder
On April 24, 2003 United States Coast Guard Commandant Admiral
Thomas H. Collins visited MSRC’s Oil Spill Response
Vessel Hawaii Responder and was given a tour by MSRC President
Steve
Benz and Vice President for the Western Region Mike LaTorre.
Joining Admiral Collins in the tour of the Hawaii Responder
were Rear Admiral Paul Pluta, Assistant Commandant for Marine
Safety and Environmental Protection, and Vice Admiral Terry
Cross, Pacific Area Commander, in addition to other dignitaries
attending the
Asia-Pacific
Heads of Maritime Safety Agencies Forum in Honolulu. Admiral
Collins and Admiral Pluta were joined by, Lieutenant Commander
John O’Connor and MSRC customer representatives Eric
Haugstad of Tesoro Petroleum Company, Bob Lindsay of Polar
Tankers (ConocoPhillips), Steve Parker of Shell Oil Company
and Kurt Jacobson of ChevronTexaco Shipping. The Commandant
spent almost an hour aboard the vessel and asked many questions
of MSRC and the crew of the Hawaii Responder.
An amusing moment in the tour was the introduction on the
bridge of Admiral Tom Collins to Captain Tom Collins, Master
of the Hawaii Responder!
